Together with our activity company Native Lapland, we offer short, or longer tours with dog sled. All tours start in Årrenjarka.

The Old Horse trail, 3-4 hour dog sled tour

Sitting on a sled pulled by strong and friendly Alaskan Huskies, you head out on the trail through the pristine and beautiful backcountry that surrounds the small village of Årrenjarka. The snow-blanketed landscape glides by as the trail leads deep into peaceful wilderness areas, far off the beaten path. We make a stop along the trail to have a warming cup of hot tea or coffee, a tasty sandwich, and a cuddle with the huskies.

While you are sitting on the sled, the guide will steer his dogs through the Kvikkjokk - Kabla, Nature Reserve, a beautiful mountain area, which is from here on roadless country. This area is accessible only on foot or by boat during summer, or on a snowmobile, dogsled skis, or snowshoes during winter. The area contains both pine virgin forests and spruce virgin forests, vast marshes, birch forests and bare mountains.

The whole area is roadless land, a real wilderness area. But there are traces of the ancient people, the settlers' hay stands on the marshes and considerably older Sami settlements. The area is still today important reindeer pasture, especially autumn and spring. For outsiders, it will seem remote and wild, but the local Sami people know every bit of land and use it continuously. Ancient remains in the form of hearths, dwellings, and hunting pits show that the area has been used for several thousand years.

During a lovely break by a crackling fire, a good cup of hot coffee/the and Swedish fika, the guide will share his experience and lifestyle with you.

Maximum: 4 persons

Riding on the guides` sled: SEK 1 750,-

Included: Warm overall and boots, tea/coffee and snack.

Overnight tour to the old farmstead

On this tour you will drive your own team of 4-6 dogs, and get a taste of life as a dog musher. You take care of "your" dogs and learn how to handle a dog team. We all work together, cooking, cleaning, feeding dogs, chopping firewood and other chores necessary for everyone to have a nice time on the trail.

After a brief introduction about safety and dog sledding, we start from Årrenjarka Mountain Lodge and control the dogs out in the white adventure. The trip goes through the old growth forests with several hundred years old pine threes now heavy with snow.

If the weather is good, we have wonderful views towards spectacular mountain tops and ice-covered lakes. For the night, we take shelter in an old farm house and enjoy the heat from the wood-burner inside the old log house. Together with the guide, we all help feeding the dogs and preparing our own evening meal. After a good night’s sleep in warm sleeping bags, we steer our sleds back to the lodge for a shower, sauna or maybe a good meal in the restaurant.

We recommend to book accomodation in the lodge before and after this tour!
